A new server

This tutorial follows one server through its first months with ni han bao: the Demo server, a community of League and Riftbound players around Leuven, Brussels and Ghent. Anna runs it. Every picture in the tutorial is of that server, so you can compare them with your own.

Get started lists the steps. This tutorial explains why Anna chose what she did, so you can choose for your server.

Adding the bot

Anna has Manage Server, so she opens the invite link, picks the Demo server and leaves the permissions ticked. Each one has a job: Read Message History lets the bot count the messages from before it joined, so the pages are not empty on day one.

The bot greets the server:

ni han baoAPP

Hi, I'm ni han bao! I count messages, reactions and voice time in this server: counts and timestamps only, never what anyone writes. See the stats (members only, log in with Discord): https://ni-han-bao.example/s/900000000000000001/leaderboard Rather not appear in the lists and charts? Use /hide-me, and /show-me to come back.

That message is also the first thing her members learn about privacy: the bot counts, it does not read, and /hide-me is there for anyone who would rather not be in the lists.

Choosing the settings

Anna types /setup and goes through it once.

Screenshot coming: /setup with its subcommands listed

Report channel. She makes a #weekly-report channel and runs /setup report-channel channel:#weekly-report. The report could go in #general, but a channel of its own keeps the weekly card and the monthly recap from drowning in chat, and members who do not care can mute it.

Time zone. Everyone lives in Belgium, so /setup timezone timezone:Europe/Brussels. Without it, "this week" would start at midnight UTC, an hour or two off, and the Monday report would land in the middle of the night. The time zone also sets the hours on the Channels heatmap and the time you give to /event going.

Rank roles. Not yet. Rank roles give every member with a linked League account a role for their tier. That is fun in a League server, but it takes Manage Roles and nobody has linked an account yet. She comes back to it in League.

Public totals. The home page adds up every server's messages, without names. Anna's members are a small group who know each other, so she runs /setup public-totals include:False and leaves the Demo server out. Nothing about the server would show either way; this is about not being counted at all.

/setup show confirms it:

You used /setup show

ni han baoAPP

Weekly report card: #weekly-report Time zone: Europe/Brussels Public totals: left out Rank roles: off (existing rank roles stay until you delete them)

Telling the members

Anna posts the site's link in #general. Members log in with Discord and see the Demo server under Your servers. Someone who is not in the server gets a "not found" page: each server's pages are for its members only.

Next: a month of activity.
